Not a Good Buy

I don’t normally talk about my shopping experiences – unless I pick up a fabulous pair of shoes – but our shopping trip last night to get our new TV was so unbelievably bad, I have to say something. Especially in light of Peter Shankman’s (one of my favorite media experts and bloggers) new venture into the world of customer service consultancy. Believe me when I tell you, Best Buy could use some lessons from Shankman’s new company!

Hud and I had done our homework and decided the TV we wanted was to be found at our local Best Buy – so off we went . . . at about 6:00 pm on a Tuesday evening. We walked in, walked straight to the department we needed and proceeded to wait for help.

Hud, waiting patiently

Now, keep in mind, the television we want is right there on the floor. Seven or eight of them in boxes, ready to go. All we need is someone to ring up our purchases. But there is no one available to do that. We see lots of people walking around, stocking shelves.

Putting up merchandise.

Never speaking to us.

Never offering to help us.

Completely ignoring us.

But the two men who were working in the TV area were with customers, so we waited.

And waited.

And waited.

For 14 minutes and 13 seconds.

Yes, I timed it.

Now, 14:13 may not seem like a long time, but when you see all these people walking around NOT helping customers, while you’re standing there – obviously needing help – 14:13 is a VERY LONG TIME.

I will give credit to the two men working in the TV department, they did apologize for the amount of time we were having to wait. But no one else was ever called over to help and we had to wait on one of them to be available to help us.

At long last, one of them did manage to pull himself away, we told him what we wanted and our transaction took all of three minutes. He then told us to pull our car to the front of the building and someone would bring the TV out and load it into the car.

Ha, ha, ha!

Want to guess how long we waited in front of the building? Did they hustle right out there to make up for our incredibly long wait?

Well, you can see in this photo, a woman is having a TV loaded into her car. She was two people behind us in line to be waited on when we were waiting inside the store.

Our TV came out after that. After we had waited 11 minutes and 24 seconds. Outside. In August. In North Carolina. It’s not exactly cool in North Carolina in August at 6:30 in the evening.

And here’s the thing. At no time were Hud and I anything but pleasant and polite to any of the employees at Best Buy. I’m sure the lack of attention we received comes from the top – from upper management – whether it’s the store management or corporate management. So we were very careful to treat the employees the way we would have wanted to be treated. But I also made very sure to document every bit of what happened to report back here.

So what’s up Best Buy? I’m starting to understand why you’ve had the financial issues you’ve been having. Going forward, I’ll either go somewhere else (my preference) or do my shopping online (Hud’s vote).

Was I Awake This Morning?

So proud of myself . . . up, running . . . even without a TV to distract me, I was doing it. Singing along with my IPod . . . yes, Pepper and the rest of the crew kept giving me looks, but that was okay. I was making progress and getting through this run.

Got my two miles in. Went upstairs to get my camera to document all this for you . . . and when I came back down, I hit the red key on the treadmill and erased all my results. That's right. Before I could take the picture, I reset the progress screen on the treadmill. I am an idiot! What was I thinking about? Was I thinking?

Who knows?

I am annoyed.

Lightning Strikes

I promise - I haven't been as slack as it might appear . . . Mother Nature has been working against me!

We had several wild and crazy storms stream through here Saturday. We made it through the first one without a problem, but the second one zapped the house with a bolt of lightning and we lost power to half the house. At that time, Hud was on a ladder (yes, with a boot on his foot!!) working on the light above the kitchen table because it was on the fritz. When the breaker popped and we lost power in half the house, I wondered if he might want to leave the electrical things alone. Not my nutty Hud!!

When everything settled down and we sorted it all out, the cable box and our big screen TV seemed to be the victims of the lightning. Time Warner was out in the neighborhood yesterday and showed us where the lightning actually struck the box at the street and then, evidently, traveled into our house through the cable - frying the cable box and the TV. We got back our internet and cable to the other TVs in the house . . . and now we have to go big screen TV shopping. With a rehearsal dinner and all this other wedding stuff coming up, this is exactly what we didn't need.

Running on the treadmill this morning was the WORST!! We have it set up where the big screen is. Now I have nothing to take my mind off what I'm doing. And it's just too hot and humid outside - even at 5 am - to think about taking it outdoors. This weekend is supposed to be beautiful and I may be able to get some outdoor running in. But until then, I'm suffering!

I want my TV back!!

Camera Found - No Picture to Show You

I found my camera!

It was in the dining room, in the seat of one of the chairs and pushed under the table. Now - does that sound like something I would do or something Hud would do? My money's on Hud. No doubt about it. And since he's on my list . . . and it's not a good list . . . I'm putting all the blame on him!!

Oh, he's just grinding on my last nerve. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that it's broiling hot outside, I can't eat chocolate because it will give me a migraine, I woke up yesterday with a migraine anyway and my toe is still hurting too bad to have a good run. Yeah, nothing to do with all THAT!!

I'm able to get on my closed-toe shoes now, but running was kind of like "yipe, yipe, yipe" so I had to be satisfied with a brisk walk. Maybe I'll double up the band-aids and try again tomorrow.

Good news at work, though. A grant request I wrote was funded for $75K! No, it doesn't mean I get $75K. It doesn't even mean I get a percentage. It does, however, mean I still have a job - which is nice - and the entire organization knows I'm bringing in money, not just spending it.

Better get back to it . . . I'll get some pics later!

And the Beat Goes On

Another day with my toe driving me crazy. A rotten day at work. And I wake up with a migraine headache. I am not a happy camper.

Day Two of the Missing Camera Mystery

Lyda Ann's crazy days continue . . .

Still can't find my camera. I know darn good and well that Hud has done something with it - and he's just as adamant that he hasn't touched it. So here we are. Stalemate and neither one of us blinking. That doesn't help when you're looking for your camera. Of course, I could just take a picture with my phone, now that I've charged it, but that's beside the point.

Then, when it was time to run this morning, I tried to put on my shoe and my big toe said WHOA!! Yesterday, I went to the doctor and had a wart frozen off that toe. I didn't give it that much thought until I tried to put closed-toe shoes on. Even with a band-aid on, it was like barbed wire on a raw nerve. Yikes! I may have to give that tender skin a few days.

So, let's borrow some questions from Kenlie over at her All the Weigh blog and participate in Friend Making Monday. Here are the rules: take a moment to answer this week’s questions on your own blog, then add your link in the comments section here at: www.alltheweigh.com so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts.

My Community

1. Where were you born? Did you grow up there? I was born in North Carolina and moved away after I graduated from college. I met Hud in Tampa, FL and we lived in Las Vegas, NV before we were fortunate enough to get to move back to my hometown in North Carolina.

2. Tell us about your favorite spot in your city. I love my dad's back porch. It was my grandmother's house and it overlooks a lake with beautiful sunsets. I could look at that water all day.

3. Do you volunteer for any organizations? If so, will you tell us about it? I volunteer at Hospice Home on Saturday mornings - answering the phone and making coffee - and I donate blood every eight weeks. I know that's not volunteering, but it's important and they always have doughnuts!

4. Tell us about your favorite local restaurant. Southern Roots is an amazing local restaurant with the best shrimp and grits I've ever eaten. I also love Poblano's for Mexican food.

5. Has your city ever experienced tragedy? If so, how did it recover? Back in the 1980s, a young mother and her male cousin killed her ex-husband, his new girlfriend, his parents and his sister - all in an effort to avoid sharing custody of the children. When the police were closing in on them, they killed the children and then blew themselves up in their car. It all happened in this area and was well documented in Jerry Bledsoe's book "Bitter Blood." I lived here by myself at the time (Hud was stationed in Korea) and I was scared to death!

6. Share at least one unique thing about your neighborhood. All of our sidewalks are made of brick throughout town.

7. If you could do one small thing to change your community, what would you do? I would reroute traffic so people didn't cut through neighborhoods.

8. The Powerball is currently up to 400 million dollars. Would you move to a different place if you won? I would probably stay here, but I would have a vacation home at the beach and one in the mountains and spend lots of time at both!

When All Else Fails . . .

Had a good run this morning . . . my right heel was still kind of tight, but it worked itself out after a while and felt pretty good as I got my two miles in. As I was ready to take my photo of the treadmill screen, I realized my phone battery was dead, so I had to use my camera to take the picture.

Well, now that it's time to load the picture here, I can't find the camera!! I remember putting it down and thinking "it will be here tonight when I need to connect to the computer." And now it's gone. Hud swears he didn't move it. Pepper's walking around looking all innocent. So what did I do with it? This is going to drive me crazy!!

Here's hoping you're having a better evening!!

Race Schedule

Was this ever a crazy, busy weekend - or what? It was all fun stuff, but it seemed as though Hud and I didn't sit down for five minutes. Although once I finish telling you all about this, you'll see that yes, we did sit down for quite a while.

I had the best time Thursday on my once a month visit around the county, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, learning more about the area in which I work. This month was Business and Industry month and we toured seven different businesses and factories. It was fascinating - it really was! I think this was the most fun I've had since we started this back in January! I loved every minute of this and really learned so much, although walking on all those concrete floors had my feet hurting by the end of the day.

Then I had another good run on Friday - they just seem to be getting better every day - which makes me feel good about the work I'm putting in.

Friday was Sparky's birthday and since Gina was out of town for her bachelorette party, we made plans to take him out for his big day. Well, evidently he did some celebrating of his own Thursday night, because I rushed home from work to find out he was in no shape to go out Friday night. So Hud and I watched the Braves game on TV (yes, we're old) and I signed up for my fall 5K races. Here's my plan:

September 14 - Flurry's Hope Blind Horse Rescue 5K
October 5 - Women's Only 5K for Breast Cancer Prevention
October 26 - Greensboro Marathon 5K
November 2 - The 80s Called they Want their Race Back - to benefit the United Way
November 16 - Matt Gfeller Doughnut Run for concussion awareness
December 7 - Ragsdale Family YMCA Reindeer Run
December 14 - Running of the Balls

I'm hoping the weather won't get TOO cold before that last race in December. Then I'll bring my training back inside to the treadmill and wait until the weather warms up in the spring. A friend, who knows I like to run in races that benefit the military, sent me a link to an Air Force race at the end of August. Thanks, but no thanks - I'm worried that the race on September 14 is going to be too hot. There's a small window of perfect weather that I'm looking for when I run outside.

Saturday was Hud's and my 29th wedding anniversary. Yes, 29 years ago, I got my hooks in him!! Not, as someone once asked me several years ago, did we get married the day after Sparky was born. We celebrated our third anniversary the day after Sparky was born. When you've been married this long - and you have a wedding and a vacation coming up in the near future - you don't make really big plans for your anniversary. I'm still on a crusade to get Hud to do something with his artistic ability, so we went to Wine and Design - where they walk you through creating a painting AND you can drink while you're doing it. We had a great time and Hud did a pretty good job!

Hud's trees look great - mine look like bonsai.

We were supposed to go out tonight with Sparky, Gina and Chipper, but Gina is late getting back from her girl's weekend, so it may happen tomorrow. We'll see.

Lyda Ann Ran All Day!

Good run this morning - and then off to a crazy, busy day today.

Feels as though I didn't stop all day . . . and I still haven't stopped!!

Will catch you up later - so glad tomorrow's Friday!!

Easy stomach . . . easy . . .

Oooo, today did NOT start well. Several times during the night, I woke up and thought "I'm going to be sick." But then I would go back to sleep. Not sure exactly what was going on. There's a stomach bug that's been going around and I thought I had managed to stay away from it. Who knows? Anyway, I was walking delicately this morning. Never did get sick - thank God - but it was ginger ale and saltines for breakfast for me!

Hud is feeling really tired today - he actually had work to do today instead of just training. But he's still so glad to be back at work instead of sitting at home.

Sparky's birthday is Friday and our anniversary is Saturday, so lots of celebrating going on this weekend! Hope my tummy troubles are over!

Oh, What a Beautiful Morning!

What a great day today!

You can almost feel fall in the air - I know, I know . . . we still have to get through August. But I remain ever hopeful that low humidity days are in the future!

Another really good run this morning! My right foot was twinging a little bit - like plantar fasciitis wanted to kick in or something. But I kept running and after about 10 minutes, my heel stretched itself out and everything was fine.

Hud had another good day at work - just glad to be back there and earning a paycheck. Even if he's sitting around, doing online training in front of a computer. We're calling him Scooter or Scutaro now, since he's still going around on his knee scooter. His job is stretched out over four very large buildings, so he's really moving a lot faster now than he ever has!

Got the rehearsal dinner invitations for Gina and Sparky sent to the printer today - their big day is getting closer! I was really happy with how pretty they look and they have Gina's colors - purple and orange. I found dinner napkins and cocktail napkins in her colors on Saturday, so it's all starting to come together.

Of course, the ol' credit card is taking a pretty good hit for this dinner, but . . . might as well enjoy it!

I'm Back!

Great run this morning! It felt as though I hadn't missed a single step . . . as though I finally got back the running form I had lost. I was beginning to think it was never going to get there!

Hud and I had a good Sunday. Started the day with a little bit of a pity-party for Lyda Ann. If I tried to explain, it would get into too much TMI, but suffice it to say I spent the morning on the couch with a cup of tea with honey and felt sorry for myself. Hud finally roused me around noon and suggested we go out for a movie. We went to see RED 2 and it was great!!

I can shoot a gun, but Helen Mirren kicks ass! I know it's just a movie, but she is amazing in it!

The pups decided yesterday afternoon that Hud looked like a soft touch for a snack and they wouldn't leave him alone in the kitchen!

Hud has Pepper and Comet's undivided attention

Rocket tries the pitiful look

They were pretty funny!

Hud had a great day at work today - just so glad to be back. He took his knee scooter, rather than his crutches, so his new name is Scooter, but he'll take it.

Here's hoping for another great run tomorrow!

I Overslept!

Not sure exactly what happened, but when I woke up this morning I had slept right through the “get up in time to run” time and it was already “ get up and get ready for volunteer gig” time. Tomorrow was going to be my rest day for this week, but I guess today was, by default.

I guess it will be running Sunday.

Friday at Last!

Friday has arrived at last!

Took long enough to get here, didn't it? And this weather has been perfect - highs in the low 80s, low humidity. If summer was always like this, I would really like summer. As it is, not so much.

Well, let's get right to it - this morning's treadmill work:

I'm hoping tomorrow morning will be just as nice as this morning and I may try taking it outside again. I'll give the weather report a check and see.

Not much to report from work today - just another day in the salt mines.

I'm working on a project for a wedding gift for Sparky and Gina, so I'd better get to it. Enjoy your weekend!

Let's go to Day Care!

Fun day today!

Started with a good run on the treadmill. Got it done and felt pretty good about it.

I just realized how bad this picture is - it doesn't show the mileage, it shows the laps! Oh for goodness sake!! I guess you can tell I wasn't paying attention this morning! Crazy!

Fortunately, I managed to wake up for the rest of the day (at least I think I did) and participated in a tour of some of the child care centers in the county where I work. My company has a Foundation that has contributed funds to help improve the outdoor play areas at 10 child care centers in our county, so this was our opportunity to see the work that has been done with the money.

Water play area

All the centers were bright and fun, with so many cool areas for the kids to play - made me wish I could go there everyday and hang out, instead of being stuck inside an office. Playgrounds didn't look like this when I was growing up, nor when Sparky and Jet were, either.

Painting on plexiglass sheets - hose off with water

I was also amazed at the innovative and creative things the child care center workers are doing with really inexpensive items.

These are the water catchers for the bottom of clay pots, turned upside down and painted for an in-the-ground game of Twister. How cool is that?

A used tire on a fence becomes an herb garden that the children can plant and taste - and the plants are protected while "play time" goes on around them.

It was a great day to be outdoors and lots of fun to see how creatively the grant money has been spent!

On the good news front, Hud got cleared to go back to work on Monday! It will be light duty and he still can't put any weight on his foot for another four weeks, but he will be going to work - and he's so happy! He's already been over to his HR department to make sure his paperwork is all in order for him to come back. I've never seen anyone so anxious to get back to work in my life. I would have enjoyed being at home all this time, but Hud isn't like that. This enforced rest has been driving him (and in turn, me) crazy!

Tomorrow is Friday - hope you've had a great week!

And We're Running . . .

Another good morning on the treadmill! I really appreciate all of you that are keeping up with me here, every day. It's truly making me get out of bed when that alarm goes off - instead of turning back over and catching another hour of sleep. And - as much as it pains me to admit it - it makes for a much better start to the day!
Wait . . . did I really say that?

Hud goes back to the doctor tomorrow. He broke his heel in May and then had to have surgery on it in June. He was told four weeks ago that it would be 8 - 10 weeks before he could put any pressure on his heel and before he could go back to work. He thinks he is going to tell the doctor, tomorrow, that he HAS to go back to work immediately because he can't stand it anymore. I have a sneaking suspicion that he will be at home another four weeks.

I guess we'll see tomorrow.

Break Time!

I have to admit it . . . it was nice to sleep in a little bit this morning. J Although I did hear, from a friend who was up and walking bright and early, that I missed a beautiful sunrise on one horizon while an almost full moon was setting on the opposite horizon. That would have been something to see! But I was only able to sleep in about 30 minutes and then it was up and at ‘em . . . and out the door to work!

Still looking at races for this fall . . . I’ve found some fun ones for December and November, but not much for October. Anyone have any suggestions? Keeping in mind, 5K is my distance and the fewer hills on the course, the better.

Since the Braves are collapsing here in the bottom of the 6th inning, as I’m putting this online, I’ll just go on to bed and get a good night’s sleep so I’ll be fresh and ready to jump on the treadmill in the morning.

I'm Walking Into Spiderwebs

Sorry . . . I've got that song in my brain. What is it you're supposed to do to get a song out of your head? Is it share it with all your blog friends? Well, here you go!

Can you tell what I was watching while I was on the treadmill this morning? It's still with me.

But yes, another successful morning of running! I can't say it was easy - but it was done!

I was also back online, looking at 5K races for this fall. The very first race I ran in last year was the Matt Gfeller Doughnut Run to prevent and treat youth sports head injuries. Since the very first grant I ever wrote, in my current job, was for a Concussion Prevention Program for High School Athletes, I thought that was appropriate. And, of course, I'll always run for a doughnut!! Last year's race was around the middle of October. This year, it won't be held until November 16th. Sign me up!

Tomorrow will be a day of rest from my running program. I have an early morning meeting at work, so I have to be there at 7:30 - that means leaving the house between 6:45 and 7:00. I'll get up at 5:00 and run, but not any earlier than that - sorry. Stop back by, though, and we'll discuss the Royal Baby's name - surely we'll know by then!!

Sunday Morning - Taking it Easy

How’s the weather where you are? We’re about to get hit with a thunderstorm – it looks like one is converging from the north and one from the west – and Rocket is about to jump out of his skin. He doesn’t like storms on his best day, and this one really has him going.

Rocket panting - wanting someone to take him away!

This morning’s run was much better than yesterday’s – that’s for sure! For starters, I didn’t have a dog plastered to my leg or trying to run between my feet. That made a world of difference! Then, I finally broke out my new running shoes! I’ve had these shoes for several weeks now but have just never taken the time to put my insoles in them and get them ready to go for “in the morning.” And let’s face it, when I’m trying to get ready in the morning, I really don’t have time. So, this morning I finally took them out of the box and got them ready to go – and loved them! There’s just something about new shoes that makes your run even better.

Here are my new ones and my old ones, that will now be retired to walking shoes.

The tag on my right shoe is from MyRoadID.com. It’s a service you can subscribe to or purchase that will store your emergency contact information and give you one of these tags to have on your shoe or wear on your wrist or around your neck. Then, if you ever have a medical emergency during a race or while you’re training, emergency responders have access to all your information right there. Even though Hud and I were running races together, we don’t run at the same pace, so we decided this was a good idea, in case one of us fell out or got hurt during a race.

Here are my results from today’s running:

I’ve been looking for some races this fall to get signed up for so I can start looking at my running as training. I found one on September 14  - a 5K and 10K supporting Flurry’s Hope, a horse rescue organization, in Madison, NC. All the info is on OnTheMarkSports.com and the entry fee for the 5K is $25. My questions are: will it be cool enough on September 14 and will I be able to run a race on the 14th with Sparky’s wedding coming up on the 21st?

Decisions, decisions . . . .

Running With the Devil

Devil-dog, ahem, Raleigh really lived up to her name last night. She was on fire as soon as Hud and I were ready to go to bed. She was up - whining, running around the house, just acting like a nut! And the later it got, the more energy she seemed to get! We finally got her to sleep in the laundry room and we were able to sleep a couple of hours. Talk about a horrible night!!

I got up with Raleigh around 6:00 this morning and decided to take her out for a run to try and burn some of that excess energy off. Here's what I learned this morning:

1.  She probably thinks her name is now "Dammit Dog" because that's what she heard herself called most during our outing. She seemed to want to run plastered to my leg or between my feet - it was a miracle that I didn't meet the pavement with my face a couple of times.

2. There is a reason I haven't chosen any 5K races to run during the summer - it's TOO DARN HOT AND HUMID!! Even though it was early when we were out this morning - before the sun came up - the air was so heavy with humidity, it was almost hard to breathe. I'm sticking to my treadmill until the weather breaks!

3. I was able to get my Garmin working this morning - and I think there might even be a way to link it to the computer and download the results. I might be amazed if I actually read the directions and learned what I can do with it! In the meantime, here is a snapshot of my results for the day.

You can see my distance was 2.63 miles and the time was 38:38. Really, really bad for that distance!! We walked and ran and walked and ran - as much as I could stand in the heat. But I got it done!

I finally got Hud's phone to communicate with my computer so you can see a picture of my running buddy - this is from our walk last night:

Lyda Ann and Raleigh

Fortunately, Sparky has taken Raleigh back home, so hopefully we'll all get a good night's sleep tonight. I'll be back on the treadmill tomorrow, thankful for the a/c!!

It's Gotta Get Easier . . . Doesn't It?

Yes, I really believed running was going to be MUCH easier this morning. I just knew I had knocked the rust off and was going to coast right back into my former pace and form.

Uh, no. Not so much. Not even a riveting season premier of Project Runway could take my mind of how much this was KILLING ME!! Why, oh why, did I ever let myself get out of the habit of running? Why did I think I could just jump right back into it - like nothing? Where do I get such stupid ideas?

Oh well, here's today's visual evidence:

You can see I went a little bit farther - and for a longer amount of time - than yesterday.

Somehow Hud and I have found ourselves sitting for our "grand-dog" Raleigh tonight - the worst behaved dog on the face of the earth. I've been trying to get a picture of the devil dog on here for you, but for some reason Hud's phone (where the picture is located) and my computer aren't speaking at the moment. If anything changes, I'll update. Anyway, Raleigh's a young, energetic Lab who has to spend all day cooped up in the house while her "parents" work. The bottom line is - she doesn't get enough exercise, and that makes her CRAZY!!! Since she's going to be with us tomorrow morning - and I'm still not clear on how Hud got talked into THAT - I'm thinking that I'll take her out for a run when I get up. Let's see if I can run out some of that energy. AND let's see if I can finally figure out the Garmin watch I got for my birthday . . . that I have yet to use.

So, I've got the Garmin charging, to be ready to go in the morning. I'd love to think it will be nice and cool in the morning for an outdoor run . . . somehow, I don't think so.

Checkin' In and Getting Up

I did it!!

I dragged myself out of bed - bright and early this morning - and made myself run this morning, just like I planned.

It would have been so easy to turn over and go back to sleep this morning . . . for some reason, I didn't sleep very well last night. It's been so hot outside and our a/c has had a problem keeping up. So when that alarm went off, I thought "I have a presentation at work today. I probably need to make sure I'm well-rested."

But no - I knew I had made this stupid deal to be here and be accountable. So, I got on up and got moving.

You can see from the distance numbers - over there in the upper right hand corner - that I hit just above two miles this morning.

For some reason, I expected to go right back to the pace and ease of running that I had two months ago when I was running nearly every day. What was I thinking about? This was TOUGH! I had to cut the pace back, but I got it done in the time I had available!

So, what's next? Tomorrow - two miles again. And, looking at that list from Runner's World, it looks as though I should choose some races and go ahead and sign up for them. Of course, that's exactly what got me running in the first place  - signing up for races! . . . don't know why I couldn't figure that out for myself. So if you know of any 5K races in North Carolina you think I would enjoy, let me know about them. I'm especially looking for races in the October/November/December 2013 time frame.

On a sad note,

I just saw on their Facebook page where Schoep, the sweet dog whose image was captured in this picture that has been all over the internet, died yesterday - just a few weeks after his 20th birthday. Yes, his 20th birthday! I know that I shouldn't be sad for a dog who had a nice, long life like that, but it still was a blue note for the day.

Stay cool out there - it's been another hot one around here! I'll be back on the treadmill tomorrow!!

Ready, Set . . . Go!

So, how many times have I said it? How many times have I told myself “I’m getting up in the morning and running”? How many times have I set the alarm to get up, only to turn it off and go back to sleep for an extra hour of snoozing?

Well, let’s see . . . my last 5K race was in May – May 11th as a matter of fact – and here we are more than two months later. It’s probably been that long since I seriously ran and “trained.” And if I’m going to call myself a runner – shouldn’t I actually run?

Today, I saw this list by Calvin Hennick and published in Runner’s World –  “101 Kicks in the Butt” to give you motivation to run. The number one tip on the list is to create a blog and post your daily mileage. I’ve already got the blog . . . I was making a half-hearted attempt to post my daily mileage . . . so now, what’s going to be the difference?

I’m asking people to hold me accountable. That’s it!! I’m going to announce on a daily basis what my goal for the next day’s run is – and I’m asking everyone who is reading my blog to hold me accountable to that goal. I don’t want to have to explain to anyone why I slept in or slacked off . . . so I’m hoping this will do the trick!!

Here we go . . . my goal for tomorrow is to run two miles before work. I know – it doesn’t sound like much for you distance runners, but it’s a big start for 5K girl here. Wish me luck – cheer me on . . . and hold me to it. I need your help!!

Celebrity Sighting!

So, how is your day going so far? Hud and I had a GREAT time Tuesday night, watching Bull Durham on the big screen . . . even though someone in my office thought that was the name of a band we were going to see. No . . . I won't even dignify that with a comment.

But here's the even more exciting part - I had my very first celebrity sighting!! Well, as close to a celebrity as I'm ever going to get, that's for sure!! If you take a look at the right-hand side of my blog, you will note that one of the blogs I follow and read on a daily basis is "Bye Bye Pie" by the wonderful and talented June Gardens. I think she is hilarious. And she lives in the area, which is even better! Well, when Hud and I were leaving the theatre last night, who did we see but June - herself
It's June! Photo from Bye Bye Pie web site - go read it!

And her friend Ned!!

Ned!! - photo from Bye Bye Pie web site - I'm not kidding - go read it!!

Of course, Hud was hobbling along on his crutches, so we were WAY behind them leaving the theatre and I was too embarrassed to scream out "June, I'm one of your biggest fans!!" or anything remotely like a 13-year-old girl . . . so Hud and I just calmly walked to the car and drove home.

Once again, Hud had NOT taken his cell phone with him and mine remained in my purse on silent (as usual) so when we got home, there was a text from Sparky on Hud's phone and three missed calls on my phone. Turns out Gina had a really bad stomach virus and couldn't stop throwing up, so Sparky was taking her to the ER - but they needed someone to stay with Chipper. Oops. Bad grandparents!! We were out of commission - at the movies!! Fortunately, she's feeling better and I tried to make up for being gone by offering to go to the store and get saltines and ginger ale . . . but I guess it was too late. Sigh.

Here's hoping for better luck today!!

I Believe in the Church of Baseball

After another rainy weekend, which was doing a number with my migraines (ow, ow, ow!!!) yesterday was another rainy Monday. If you live in the eastern part of the US, are you COMPLETELY OVER all this rain?!?! I’ve never seen weather like this before! My flowers are loving it – I should insert a photo here (and I’ll try to remember to do that later) – but I still look as though I’ve never seen the sun before, since my swimsuit has yet to make an appearance. That’s not a good sign for wedding photos in September.

Speaking of which, Hud and I went through a lot of the old videos and pictures from when the kids were little over the weekend. We’re putting together a video for Sparky and Gina at the rehearsal dinner of the two of them as they were growing up. Gina’s parents are getting her pictures and video to me. So Hud and I spent hours going through our old stuff. Wow – you forget how little they used to be . . . sniff, sniff. Yes, I’ll admit it – had to get out the tissues a couple of times. I think I’m going to be a wreck at this wedding!! And if I don’t get back to running on a daily basis and get my eating back on track, I will be even more of a wreck at this wedding!! I have two months and two weeks to get myself together. NOW IS THE TIME.

I’ve been online like a fiend, trying to get Freddie Freeman, the Braves first baseman voted to the National League All Star Team. You can vote online at MLB.com as often as you like, so I’ve been at work – working on a project, voting ten times. Reading a report, voting ten times. Then at home . . . folding clothes, voting ten times. Make the bed, voting ten times. I’m determined to send more than one Braves player to the All Star Game!! They are at the top of the National League East standings and they only have one player going to the game – what’s up with that?!?!
#VoteFreddie on Twitter!

I’m so excited for tonight – at the historic movie theatre downtown, they are playing my very favorite movie of all time – Bull Durham!! I can’t wait!! Hud and I are supposed to be on an austerity program now . . . working to pay off our bills so we can get our house ready to put on the market. But I said we HAVE to go see this movie.

Now, to just get through the day, vote for Freddie and get to the movies!!

Let's Be Friends

Once again, we're taking a page from our friends at "All the Weigh" blog and participating in Friend Making Monday. Want to join in the fun? Just post these questions to your blog and answer them - then link back to this blog and All the Weigh. That way, we get to see each other's answers and get to know each other a little bit better.

Easy Answers

1.  Are you a planner, or do you prefer to see where the moment takes you?  I like to consider myself spontaneous, but in the back of my mind, I’m always planning “what’s next.” People may think I’m flying by the seat of my pants, but I’ve had these plans in my mind for weeks/months.

2.  How often do you blog?  I’ve tried to be a daily blogger, at least Monday – Friday, but I’m not always successful with that. I’m trying to choose a schedule and stick to it.

3.  Do you color your hair?  Yes.  As nature is adding her own natural highlights (read: gray), I’m continually adding my own to blend in. But if you ask me about them, I’ll tell you it’s all natural.

4. If you had to choose between running or riding a bike, which one would you choose?  I like them both equally.

5.  Have you ever traveled outside of your home country?  Just to Canada – I’d love to travel much more – anyone looking to finance that kind of travel?

6.  Do you like weddings?  Yes and No…as the mother of the groom to an up-coming wedding, I can attest to how stressful and expensive they are.

7.  What is your favorite guilty pleasure on TV?  It used to be the Osbornes on MTV, but now . . . I watch a lot of Braves baseball, Burn Notice, Necessary Roughness, Suits and Graceland but nothing I feel guilty about sharing.

8.  Are you good at math?  Not at all. If you say “math,” my brain says, “whoa” and shuts down.

9.  What is the last movie you watched?  Hud and I went to see “The Heat” with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy. Hilarious – I think it was funnier than “Bridesmaids.”

10.  Share five adjectives that your friends would use to describe you.  Generous, happy, enthusiastic, loud, funny

Bonus:  Did you celebrate Independence Day?  If so, what did you do?  Watched our town’s 4th of July parade, then prepared WAY too much food for the number of people who attended our barbeque. We’ll be eating watermelon for weeks.

Happy Birthday USA!!

Happy 237th Birthday, USA!!

The ol' girl looks pretty good for this age, doesn't she?

I don't remember where I heard this, but I think it accurately describes the differences between British people and Americans. The British think 200 miles is a long way. Americans think 200 years is a long time.

Pepper and I wish you and yours a safe and happy Independence Day. And many, many more!!

Fun with Facebook

I had a great run yesterday morning and felt really good all day . . . until dinner, when a headache started around the edge of my eyes. It wasn't really bad, so I kept on with my life - as you do - but by the time I went to bed, it was a full-blown migraine. Ow!! And also, WTF!!! Things had really been going so well on the migraine front! I guess with all the storms we've had rolling in here every night, I should have expected this, but I was really annoyed.

So, I slept in this morning and still feel a little groggy, but much better.

But, I'm not going to dwell on that today - I have something much more fun to talk about . . .

You know what's fun about Facebook? Even if you're not "friends" with someone, you occasionally get updates on people you didn't even know you were interested in finding out about.

Case in point - when I was in high school . . . probably the summer before my junior year, a guy moved into the neighborhood where some of my friends lived. Was this guy cute? Oh, yes he was.

I know, but it was 1979

Did I make a nuisance of myself, spending WAY too much time hanging outside his house, hoping to be noticed? Probably. In fact, let’s just say yes, I did. Did I work out some sort of scheme (that I have blissfully forgotten) that caused said cute guy to have to drive me home one evening? Yes, shamefully I did. And did any of this do me one bit of good? No, no it did not. Cute guy ignored me completely and totally. Even when he bagged my groceries while he worked at the local grocery store. However, he did start dating, and eventually married, one of the cute cashiers at said grocery store and, last I heard, they are still married.

And, of course, you know how much better MY life turned out. I went on to bigger and better things. Met Hud and am living the high life over here. So, it’s all good.

Well, on Facebook over the weekend someone, who was friends with the cute guy in high school, put up a picture of himself and a friend at an MLB game. I saw the picture and thought “Aw, I wish I could have been in Atlanta and seen Chipper Jones when his number was retired.” Then, I saw where someone (in the comments) asked who was with him in the photo and . . . it was the cute guy!! And let me just say – not so much anymore!!

What did Van Morrison say - My, how you have grown!

Yep, I think I got the prize there!! Isn’t it funny how things work out, just the way they’re supposed to? There was some song, years ago that said “I thank God for unanswered prayers.” I don’t believe that for a minute. I truly believe God answers ALL our prayers. And sometimes the answer is NO. Not yet. Not now. Not that one.

So, let's appreciate what we have . . . work for what we need (good health) . . . and enjoy this day!!

One More - Then Lyda Ann Gets Down to Business

Are you guys getting tired of my video links yet?

I'm sorry - but it's another crazy day today. Of course, I could get up a little earlier and devote more time to writing, but . . . yeah, that didn't happen.

But I DID get up bright and early and run this morning!! Aren't you proud of me? Pepper was shocked to see me hitting the ol' treadmill at the crack of dawn, but I got it done and even increased my pace!! Now, I know all you serious runners will fall over laughing, but I'm up to 5 mph on the treadmill. I have no idea how to calculate out pace and stuff like that, but since I started out at 3.5 a year ago, I'm pretty pleased with myself.

Okay - here's another video to get you up and at 'em. And if this doesn't motivate you, I don't know what will.

Watch - and then get out there!!

Call Me Maybe

OMG!! I spent eight hours in the car yesterday . . . and if you know anything about me, you know that was about 7 1/2 hours TOO LONG!! I don't handle riding/driving in a car too well. I just get too bored and restless.

But, it all went very well and Gina's bridal shower was a huge success!! She made a nice haul! I'm kind of jealous, if you want to know the truth! I think when you've been married a certain amount of time (should we say 29 years?) you should have showers thrown for you to start replacing all the items in your house (small appliances and home goods) that need to be updated. What a great idea!! So . . . who's up for throwing ME a shower?

Any who, I think Hud and I are going to try to catch a movie this afternoon - it's supposed to rain all day around here. I was hoping to get some more gardening done, but it may have to wait for another day.

In the meantime, here's another fun video for you to watch. Love our U.S. Military!! What a bunch of cuties!!

Enjoy!! And stay dry today!!

Dancing Nana - I hope this is Me One Day!

Still crazy busy time - don't even have time to give the little Pepper girl a kiss!

So, in the meantime . . . enjoy Dancing Nana! I hope I'm still dancing like this at 88!

And be sure and listen to the very last thing she says. What a hoot!!

Nana, I feel exactly the same way!!

It's Wednesday!!

Thank goodness!

Didn't you think Wednesday would never get here? Or are you NOT having the world's longest week, like I am? I don't know what's going on, but for me and Pepper, these days are just DRAGGING along!!

Well, today is going to be a busy one, so I'm going to have to get moving . . . but I wanted to share the funniest video I saw with you. If you're needing a laugh - and let's face it - who doesn't? - then you have come to the right place!!

My favorite part is what the dogs have to say after the doorbell rings - so true!!

Enjoy your day!! The weekend is in sight!!

Time to be Brave and Show it ALL!

Okay - this is IT!!

I read an amazing blog post yesterday (Wow, Lyda Ann, how many times have you told us THAT? When do you find time to actually get any work done?)

Well, that's beside the point. I was reading this on my own time, thank you very much. The Braves weren't playing last night - so there!

AnyWAY - thanks to my wonderful cousin, Beverly Elaine, who seems to be planning a trip to Italy in 91 days and counting and why I wasn't included in this planning, I'm sure I don't know . . . dear, dear Bev pointed me in the direction of Sally, aka Unbrave Girl, who has thrown down a challenge to all of us out there who look at ourselves in the mirror from the neck up. Come on - you know who you are!!

That's right, if you haven't taken the time to jump over to her blog (go ahead, it's okay. I'll wait.) and see what she has to say about it . . . here it is in a nutshell. We are WAY TOO HARD on ourselves. We - mostly women, but I know some men who do it, too - say things to ourselves about the way we look and the things we do that we would never say to another person or that we would never tolerate from another person. And it's time to STOP!!

I know from bitter experience that calling myself fat and calling attention to my flabby arms and stomach doesn't make me stick to my diet and exercise plan any better. So why do I do it? To beat someone else to the punch? Why would I allow someone who would speak to me like that in my life?

So, Sally's challenge is to post full-length photos of yourself on your blog (if you have one) and if you don't, to send them to her email address. How cool is THAT? Takes some bravery, right? So, deep breath . . . here we go!

Lyda Ann and Hud - all dressed up for a night out on the town!

This picture has never seen the light of day because I didn't like the way my arms and stomach looked in it - never mind Hud looked fabulous and I think we looked adorable together. What was I being so silly about?

Now, here I am, representing my company at the Avon Walk to End Breast Cancer, and all I can think is, look how big my thighs are!! Really, Lyda Ann? Is that the priority here? I think there are bigger issues at work at this particular event than the size of your thighs.

Now, here I am with Hud and my gorgeous niece, Alex, and all I can see are my huge stomach and thighs. And the big boat I wish we owned behind us. Could I possibly focus on the fact that we're on vacation with the people we love most in the world? Nope, gotta find some time to beat myself up first.

And finally, yes finally, here I am getting ready for my last 5K race of the spring season. Am I celebrating the fact that I've run in 10 (count them, 10!!) 5K races since completing the Couch to a 5K program in October? Am I thrilled that I've run races I would never have imagined myself walking in a year ago? Nope, I'm examining my squinty eyes and jiggly arms and wondering why I can't seem to stick to a diet plan longer than two weeks. Sigh.
But no more of that!! Starting now, I'm celebrating my killer calves . . . not the best photo, but trust me. I've got some great-looking calves! And running all these races has only helped them.

I'm also going to celebrate these lovely collar bones and much thinner face (let's ignore the pending paperwork on the desk)! I don't have to go far to find someone who would like to trade places with me - so why am I trying to tear myself down? It's just plain silly!!

Thanks Sally!! This is exactly what we ALL needed. Now we just need to keep it up!!
